Minister of Family and Social Policies Dr. Betül Sayan Kaya was February guest of our NUN Meetings.  Kaya came together with our primary school and high school students; focused on the place of family in our civilization.

February guest of NUN meetings in which students come together with specialist from different areas was the minister of Family and Social Politics Dear Dr. Fatma Betül Sayan Kaya. These meetings are moderated by two different students every month.

Kaya started her speech by laying emphasis on the importance of the tradition of sharing in Turkish society and said, “We are not the richest country in the world, but it can be clearly seen on the list that we are the country that gives most humanitarian support, distributes most and protects the rights of the poor and oppressed.” By saying so, she underlined the benevolence of Turkish society and Turkish government.

The minister explained the importance and place of family in our civilization at great length during her speech. When she was asked about the slogan which puts “powerful women” to the basis of powerful society, Minister of Family and Social Policies said: “We respect the choices of women. They can either choose to work or not to work. We should support and help them whatever their choice is. We have provided women not to get stuck between their careers and maternity with half-time working option, unpaid leave of absence for 2 years, increasing the number of kindergartens in workplaces and finally providing economic support to grandmothers who babysit their granddaughters or sons.”

According to the results of a survey, 98% of grandmothers said that they could take care of their granddaughters or grandsons. Here Kaya emphasized the “collaboration” and “empathy” culture in Turkish society. Kaya also said that the spirit of collaboration is not limited to babysitting. Before concluding her speech, Kaya reminded that adults have responsibilities for young people, powerful people have responsibilities for the weak, wealthy people have responsibilities for the needy ones, neighbours even countries have responsibilities for each other. She asked everyone to be more caring about this.
