“What Do Our Ancestors Say?”
“What Do Our Ancestors Say?”
Our Turkish Language Department turned our proverbs into an excited competition entitled “What Do Our Ancestors Say?” for our students to internalize their cultural identity, learn the accumulation of knowledge throughout our history, and functionalize our oral history in their daily lives.
Our proverbs are the unique glitter and cultural identity of our national experience reflected in our language. Individuals with a cultural identity assimilate the life style of the society in which they live and impose meanings and react to the things happening around them depending on the norms of that society. On Wednesday, November 13, 2019, our 6th graders participated as competitors and six groups competed in groups of three, while the 5th graders participated as spectators. There were four stages in the competition; the 1st and 2nd stages were visual categories. Our students guessed the proverb from the visuals. In the third stage they filled in the blanks and in the final stage they found the proverb from the TDK(Turkish Language Association) definition. Spectator students followed the competition with excitement and fun. It was worth seeing our students' efforts to answer the questions when their time was up.
