Academician İbrahim Halil Üçer was in Our School

Istanbul Medeniyet University Philosophy Department Faculty Member Ibrahim Halil Üçer was in our school. As part of the “Academicians are in our school” program, he met with our prep year students.

Üçer explained how forgetting our traditions of science and philosophy will rumple our awareness about identity by giving examples within the concept of the history of Islamic thought. His “ruined house” metaphor was quite interesting. “If a person doesn’t have the idea of a house, a window does not mean anything. Twin Minaret Madrassa in Sivas or the work of Kâtibî symbolizes the window for us. But if unfortunately, we don’t have the thought of the house; these windows, which could show us the new horizons, will sink into nothingness.

Here are some comments of our students for the lesson in which Üçer described the history of Islamic science and philosophy by giving several striking examples:

“When I’m back from this meeting, I have felt the need to inquire about myself, what I know and what I need to know.”
Ebrar Yağcı

“This lesson was very helpful for me. I am interested in philosophy and I really like Western Philosophy more. But I have just realized that I didn’t know about Eastern philosophy. I took some notes to do some detailed research about scientists mentioned in the lesson. Our guest was very knowledgeable, and I’m impressed with his style of lecturing. If I have a chance, I want to purchase his book titled İslam Düşünce Atlası (Islamic Thought Atlas) and know more about the philosophers mentioned here.”
Berra Nur Aydın

“This lesson raised awareness. This topic was very interesting, but I believe that we didn’t have enough time. We couldn’t focus on Muslim philosophers. I wish I could hear more about what they have done.”
